  1. CSAVNTC.EXE FOR WINDOWS NT(C) 
  2. USERÆS GUIDE

  4. CSAVNTC.EXE is an operating system-specific command line scanner
  5. that is included with Command AntiVirus for Windows NT. It 
  6. provides the same up-to-the-minute and state-of-the-art protection
  7. as our GUI and on-access scanners.
  8.  
  9. Our HoloCheck(tm) scanning technology provides the most up-to-date
  10. virus prevention. The most important benefits of this technology are: 
  11.  
  12.   *  Simplified updates. You can now update the SIGN.DEF and 
  13.      Macro.def files (which contain the most current virus signatures) 
  14.      without reinstalling all of the components. This method adds 
  15.      speed and efficiency to the new version of Command AntiVirus.
  16.   *  Superior polymorphic virus detection. CSAV now offers 
  17.      unparalleled protection and elimination of polymorphic viruses 
  18.      including the dreaded Morphine, Anxiety and Spanska.
  19.   *  Scanning of embedded (OLE) documents. Not only do we scan 
  20.      documents, but if an infected document is embedded in an Excel 
  21.      spreadsheet or PowerPoint document, Command AntiVirus will catch 
  22.      it and save you from becoming infected.
  23.   *  Support for nested zip files. New virus signatures have been added 
  24.      in this release.

  27. REQUIREMENTS
  28. CSAVNTC.EXE is run from the NT command console. It requires Windows NT 3.51
  29. or higher.  It is a 32-bit NT-specific program that will not run on 
  30. any other platform.

  32. NOTES
  33. All physical drives are scanned and boot sectors are reported per 
  34. partition (not per drive). 
  35.  
  36. COMMAND LINE MODE
  37. Syntax for command-line mode:  CSAVNTC.EXE  [options] {path}+
  38. Path is one of the following: 
  39.      drive:\path, path, drive: path
  40.  
  41. In the above syntax,  {path}+ means one or more paths. 
  42.  
  43. CSAVNTC.EXE  /VIRLIST
  44. If you do not provide an option, CSAVNTC.EXE displays a help screen 
  45. and the program exits. 
  46.  
  47. Examples:
  48. csavntc c:\
  49.     csavntc /list c:\mydir 
  50.     csavntc /packed .
  51.     csavntc /paranoid q:\footest /type
  52.     csavntc /virlist
  53.     csavntc /list c:\*.*
  54.     csavntc /list /report=myrep.txt c:\mydir

  56. If entered as follows it will not work:
  57.    csavntc /virlist c:
  58.  
  59. The following files are scanned by default unless /TYPE is selected:
  60. EXE, COM, SYS, VXD, DLL, DRV, 386, XL?, DO?, OV?, CPL, FON, TSK, 
  61. ACM, ACV, TLB, TSP, OCX, VBX, SCR, and RTF. 
  62.  
  63. COMMAND-LINE SWITCHES
  64. Switch         Description
  65. /ALL           Scans all files regardless of their extension.
  66.                This is not recommended. 
  67. /APPEND        Adds to the existing report file. This switch allows 
  68.                you to have an extended report of what was scanned.
  69.                If you use the /LIST command, this report could become 
  70.                very large so you will need to clear it frequently.  
  71.                /APPEND must be used with the /REPORT switch.
  72. /ARCHIVE       Scans inside .ZIP and .ARJ files.
  73. /COLLECT       Scan a virus collection.
  74. /DELETE        Delete infected files.
  75. /DISINF        Disinfect whenever possible - deletes first-generation 
  76.                samples and files destroyed by overwriting viruses.  It 
  77.                will never delete a file that can be disinfected.
  78. /DUMB          Do a "dumb" scan of all files.
  79. /HARD          Scans all local hard drive(s).
  80. /HELP          Displays a list of available switches with a brief
  81.                description. The /? switch can also be used.
  82. /LIST          Produces a report of all objects being scanned not just 
  83.                those that are infected.
  84. /NOBOOT        Does not scan boot sectors.
  85. /NOBREAK       Does not abort scan if the CTRL + Break keys are pressed.
  86. /NOFILE        Does not scan files. This is used to scan only boot 
  87.            sectors.
  88. /NOHEUR        Disables heuristic scanning.
  89. /NOSUB         Does not scan subdirectories.
  90. /PARANOID      Increases the chances of picking up new viruses, but 
  91.                will significantly increase the risk of false positives.
  92.                only recommended for use by experienced, technical-
  93.                minded users.  Please keep in mind that we are not 
  94.                interested in receiving samples of possible false 
  95.                alarms that are only produced when this switch is used.
  96. /RENAME        Rename infected COM/EXE files to VOM/VXE.
  97. /REPORT=<file> Report all infected objects in file that is in brackets,
  98.                <filename>. Use with the /LIST command to have a full 
  99.                list of files scanned.
  100. /SILENT        Do not generate any screen output.
  101. /TODAY         Perform scan only once a day.
  102. /TYPE          Scans files that are recognized as executable. For 
  103.                example, .COM, .EXE or files that have a valid 
  104.                executable header.
  105. /PACKED        It will internally unpack all recognized objects.  
  106.                Currently, ZIP/ARJ/Ice files are supported.  This 
  107.                unpacking process does slow the scan somewhat.
  108. /VIRLIST       This must be used as the only option. If specified, 
  109.                the virus list will be printed on the screen. Use 
  110.                redirection to save that as a file.  For example, 
  111.                CSAV /VIRLIST > VIRLIST.LIS
  112. /VIRNO         Displays the number of recognized viruses.
  113.  
  114. Special macro virus disinfection options:
  115. /REMOVEALL     Remove all macros from all documents.
  116. /REMOVENEW     Remove new variants of macro viruses by removing all
  117.                macros from infected documents.
  118. /SAFEREMOVE    Remove all macros from documents, if a known
  119.                virus is found.
  120.  
  121. EXIT CODES
  122. The program uses the following exit codes, which can be checked with 
  123. the ERRORLEVEL command from a BAT file.
  124.  
  125. 0 -  Normal exit, even if the engine finds a virus.  
  126. 1 -  SIGN.DEF or MACRO.DEF is missing or is the wrong version number.
  127. Other numbers - Internal error.
  128.  
  129. RESTRICTIONS ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF COMMAND ANTIVIRUS
  130. Command AntiVirus products are copyrighted and sold under license and 
  131. distribution agreements.  The license can be viewed on our web site
